Brief History

Algeria's hard-won independence in 1962 became a symbol across Africa against colonialism. The country endured a civil war from 1991 until 2002, when peace efforts were rewarded with a fragile democratic, which has gradually matured into a pluralistic government, albeit not without criticism.
